History: | Named for Lewis Southworth (1830-1917), a freed slave who settled on property near the mouth of the stream in the 1880s. Mr. Southworth, a native of Tennessee, moved to Oregon as a slave in 1851 but was able to buy his freedom 7 years later with money he earned mining and playing the fiddle at gold camps. Later in his life Mr. Southworth donated land near Waldport for the construction of a school; he also served as a school board chairman. |
